How to get started?
Embarking on a new project, whether it’s running a marathon, studying accountancy or taking on a personal challenge, can often seem daunting. Culturally, Switzerland is a relatively risk-averse country, where a failure is too often seen as a defeat, rather than a valuable lesson. To succeed, we sometimes have to free ourselves from certain shackles and dare to step out of our comfort zone.
The first obstacle to overcome is often fear. Fear of failure, of being judged by others, of not measuring up. These fears, while natural, can be paralyzing. Acknowledging them, verbalizing them, confronting them, is the first step towards overcoming them. By making them tangible, they become obstacles that can be overcome, rather than insurmountable barriers.
Setting clear goals is also crucial. Imagine where you want to be a year from now. Visualize your success on a daily basis. These mental images, often used by elite athletes, are powerful motivators and boost self-confidence. They remind you why you started out in the first place, and help you stay focused on the goal with determination.
To achieve these goals, many coaches recommend breaking them down into smaller steps. Think of your journey not as a huge mountain to climb, but as a series of smaller, more surmountable hills. Each small success brings you closer to your final goal. Dedicating regular time to your project, even if it’s only 20 minutes, four times a week, can make all the difference. Regularity and persistence are the keys to success!
The importance of your entourage should not be underestimated. Finding a fellow traveler, someone who shares your ambitions or supports you, can make the journey a whole lot easier. This person can provide the necessary motivation in moments of doubt and discouragement. Even if it’s inconsequential, being accountable to someone else helps us to discipline ourselves. This is why many athletes have “workout buddies”.
Finally, it’s essential to accept discomfort as an integral part of the journey. Every new adventure has its share of challenges and difficult moments. Rather than avoiding them, embrace them. Remember that every difficulty you overcome brings you closer to your goal. Discomfort is a sign of growth and progress, and the worthwhile things in life are rarely devoid of effort. It’s a pleasure to discover new abilities and unsuspected inner strength.
At the end of the day, whether you want to start a new business, pass your exams or realize a cherished dream, it’s all about believing in yourself and taking the first step. Every little action, every daily effort, is a small success that brings you closer to your goal. Taking the plunge is the first step towards success.
